Day 11: Mora, Sweden

Hand washed some essential laundry in the morning with frigid well water and hot water from the electric kettle.
Then, we went out for the day. At the local grocery store we randomly saw a DeLorean car club on a Baltic road trip. On our way to Mora, we stopped by two local workshops. In these workshops Dala Horses are carved from wood and painted in a style particular to Dalarna. It was much more interesting than I expected it to be. The workshop allows visitors to see every step of the process. Plus, it has fun, large Dala horses and a Dala chicken one can climb on. The one workshop also has a Mora knife outlet center, where the kids bought really nice Swedish-made knives for a great price. Outside the workshop was a church boat. It was used every Sunday for people to cross the lake for mandatory church services. Then, we made a quick stop at Valbackens Stugby. A small camp cabin rental area where everything was made by a couple. They started in 1960. It needs some upkeep as the woman has died and her husband is elderly. Still pretty amazing.
In Mora we visited the Vasaloppet Museum. This free museum is all about the Vasaloppet, the world’s largest ski race. The yearly race is approximately 90 kilometers long and the finish line is in Mora. Recently, summer races have begun. There are running relay races and a mountain bike race. The mountain bike race allows 13,000 competitors and registration fills up in less than 48 hours.
We walked into a large church, which had some silver crowns on display.
Then, we found a public park/campground. I did laundry while the kids kept busy at the myriad of playgrounds at the park. There was even a zip line.
The manhole covers have Michael fighting the dragon. We made a crayon rubbing of it.
We went grocery shopping and headed home for another late dinner. Sweden is full of fabulous day trips.
