Day 23 - Esslingen, Germany - Europe 2022

Day 23 -  Esslingen, Germany

Today Vanessa and I took the train from Nellmersbach to Esslingen. I had little expectations for Esslingen, so was really pleased with the town. Many of the buildings here are also from the medieval era and they reminded me of some of the buildings in Rottweil. There were tons of cafes and many offered clearly-labeled vegan items. The best food item I got was hazelnut gelato. There was an interesting Esslingen Burg with a long covered stairwell and wall that looked out over the city. The first church we went into had very rare original stained glass from the 13th century. Each panel had been removed during the wars, protected, and later reinstalled!

Vanessa pointed out some “tripping stones”. These tripping stones have details about the Jewish person who had lived in the house before being taken by the Nazis, including when they were born, their name, where they went after being taken, and what happened to them. One person’s tripping stone told us they perished, but the second one said the woman survived.

Of the places I have visited in Germany, I think Edon would like to live here best.

After taking the train back to Nellmersbach and driving back to the house I ate dinner, including half a falafel sandwich from Esslingen. It didn’t have sauce on it because they seemed to only have yogurt sauce, but it was still tasty. The falafel was a little different than other falafel I have had.

Then, Vanessa took me and Miles to a local lake. Miles had requested the outing. While the sun set we walked around the lake. It was an idyllic setting. I don’t know that I would be comfortable swimming in the lake, though, as it is downhill from a pasture where cattle graze.
