Day 22 - Rottweil, Hohenzollern Castle, Althütte, Germany
After checking out of the hotel at 10:00 Mark, Edon, and I headed out for some touristy things, while our other friends headed home.
The first stop was Rottweil, which has an “old town” center. In this case, “old town” meant medieval era, with buildings dating back to the 1300s. Some of the streets were surprisingly wide considering the time period they were from. The buildings were colorful and mostly still occupied. The two churches we went into were really beautiful. It was exciting to see (what I presume is) older German religious art in German churches.
After Edon enjoyed an espresso and croissant from a local cafe, we drove to our next destination.
The Burg Hohenzollern is a castle that is partially open to the public to visit. Part of it is still used as a private residence by the family that owns it and those sections are not open. This castle belonged to Kaiser Wilhelm II (he is an important figure in history - Google him). It is the “the ancestral seat of the imperial House of Hohenzollern” (Wikipedia). I move slowly through places like this, so Edon and Mark had a beer in the Castle Beer Garden while they waited for me. The views from the bastions, the old weapons, and the items in the Treasure Room were my favorite parts. Pictures aren’t allowed in the Treasure Room.
Mark, Edon, and I drove back through Stuttgart to the house. Edon made a super delicious dinner of gnocchi with homemade sauce. He and Kyle left for the gym. Vanessa and I went for a walk. The sun was sinking in the sky and the temperature was just right for shorts and a long sleeve. Vanessa showed me a small graveyard with a memorial showing the names of the men from the town who died in WWI and WWII. Some last names appeared for both wars and on headstones in the graveyard. There was also an anti-war poem inscribed on the memorial.
From the graveyard we took a new to me path to overlook hill. The route home went through the woods and streets of Althütte that were also new.
